  1. DRAWING SUBTLE SHAPES 
  2. Recreating a subtle shape from 
  3. memory is not  easy.  The 
  4. unfamiliarity of the shape and 
  5. its subtle spatial relations 
  6. make it difficult to copy.
  7.  
  8. A second difficulty in drawing 
  9. accurately even when copying 
  10. from actual objects or other 
  11. pictures concerns the subtle 
  12. spatial relations that 
  13. constitute certain shapes. For 
  14. example, suppose we attempt to 
  15. sketch a horse or a picture of 
  16. one. For most of us, this is 
  17. difficult to do well, even if we 
  18. take great pains with it. We 
  19. realize when we look at our 
  20. first attempt that it is not right, 
  21. but, curiously, we do not 
  22. necessarily know why it is 
  23. misshapen. If we continue to 
  24. revise the sketch, we can 
  25. recognize when it is improved. 
  26. By converting the task into one 
  27. of correction through 
  28. recognition, we may eventually 
  29. achieve a satisfactory drawing, 
  30. but few take the trouble to do 
  31. so.
